Harmony Room Mural

Hi Cath

Thank you so much, you have no idea how many positive comments I've had,
I just can't keep up with them!

I have had promising signs that the movie room will also be approved.
Can you remind me when you are available to do it so I can try to tee it
up - really cant wait!

You are amazing!

Mural Testimonial from Wyong Hospital

Thank you Cath I have just received the photos. I have asked Jill to formally send a letter of thanks to the dulux manager and I have also asked her to invite the fishing club for a look at the project as I have sent them some photos to look at. If they decide to come I will let you know.

I just want to thank you so dearly for the wonderful mural you have done for us and let you know that this has made our distraction technique so much easier. We had a 12 year old child in there today and she figured out the plane after a little while. The mother commented on what a happy and inviting area it was and that until she walked into the room she was very nervous and worried about the dressing we were going to do. So already it is having such a positive impact on the kids and their families.

You are a truly gifted person who deserves all the happiness and generosity in the world.

Please take care of yourself.

Muralist Puts Skill In Frame To Help Schoolchildren
Newcastle Herald Saturday March 29, 2008 By Jacqui Jones

After seeing first hand the poverty in many African schools, Shortland's Cath Chegwidden figured there had to be a way to help. Aware of concerns many potential charity donors have about bureaucracy gobbling up money, she spent her time in Africa collecting names and addresses of people at schools and churches to send educational resources to.

She has since spent $1700 posting donated books, pencils, paper and other items to recipients, consequently helping thousands of students. "You know your products are getting through and it's doing some really wonderful good," Ms Chegwidden said. "It's been a wonderful thing because people think if you give money it will go to the wrong place, which is very likely. By giving an item [directly] it's just a different ball game."

During her visit to Africa, Ms Chegwidden saw that hunger was hindering children's learning. After finding out it would take only $2200 to provide breakfast for 500 children for a year, she put up the money herself. The charitable Novocastrian is seeking help to continue her work and is using art to promote the cause. She has taken her vast experience of painting murals for John Hunter Hospital and the private sector to a small scale, illustrating a children's book about the Australian bush called Fire in the Crown.

The original artwork is on exhibition at Studio 48 gallery, New Lambton, until April 20.
Sixteen pictures and copies of the book are for sale, with all profits going to the African schools project.

Doctor's Orders  (Newcastle Herald Saturday March 29th 2008 ) Jill Stowell

"Most people will know Cath Chegwidden's artmaking from many projects she has been involved in at the John Hunter Hospital. At Studio 48 until April 25 a room of small paintings presents the original illustrations for Fire in the Crown, a cautionary tale of environmental concerns, with proceeds from sales going to a private health initiative in Africa. Cath Chegwidden is also a specialist in murals and other architectural embellishments."

Kaleidoscoop  (Issue 1 Spring/Summer 2007)

"Artist Cath Chegwidden, is transforming the procedure room into a circus arena. Emergency Medicine Paediatrician Dr Mark Lee said the bright colours and the characters on the walls have already made a big difference to children’s anxiety levels.

“When the children walk into the room, they focus on the activity splashed on the walls rather than the upcoming painful procedure, the bright lights and the strange equipment,” he said. “It’s a great way of reducing anxiety levels. We use it as a talking point with the children, a way of engaging with them on a personal level to help them relax in what can be a very intimidating enviroment," he said."

Interface - Newsletter of the Gardiner Library Service   (No 73 Nov 2003 Pg 4)

"For those interested in local history and the history of our health service, Cath Chegwidden’s book, The Anatomy of an Artwork, is a must read. Cath Chegwidden, a local artist, was commissioned by Hunter Health to produce some commemorative artworks for the refurbishment of Rankin Park Aged Care and Rehabilitation Unit.

Her works, consisting of five major panels, represent the five decades of the hospital’s existence. These panels, along with other of her works are now displayed proudly in the refurbished Rankin Park Unit.

Whilst researching in preparation for beginning her works of art, Cath delighted in the stories about Rankin Park, its services, staff, patients and visitors, and felt compelled to record these. The Anatomy of an Artwork is not only Cath’s creative journey, but the journey of many who have worked, lived and visited the Rankin Park Unit since its opening in 1947.

Copies of the book are available for loan from the library, or can be obtained through John Hunter Hospital Public Relations Unit."

Interface is produced by the Gardiner Library Service, a unit of Hunter Health, specialising in the provision of information services for medicine & health science.
